Aggregate Sand Soil ( ASS ) in Road Pavement Trials
Through research,LGED has evolved
a new road pavement design known as the Aggregate Sand Soil (ASS) which is a replacement of khoa sub-base and khoa base course.
This
technology has proved to be a satisfactory and cost effective pavement design in respect
of low cost, low technology, labor-intensive roads for rural Bangladesh provided the
pavement is protected with a reasonable surface treatment, such as, a thin layer of premixed
bituminous seal coat. The main advantage of ASS road is that it reduces significantly the
use of bricks/stones which forms the single largest component of cost in
conventional pavements. Thus, the cost of pavement with ASS base (excluding surface
treatment) has been found considerably lower than conventional pavement. Also in respect of
pavement deteriorations and maintenance, ASS road has exhibited minimum deteriorations.
