| Impact
of the floods |
|
The 1998 floods will have
major effects on Bangladesh's development, including:
- a setback in the reduction of
poverty and a significant loss of income and assets among the poor
- a fall in GDP growth from the
projected rate of 6 percent to about 3.3 percent in FY 1999,due to a decline in all
sectors,but particularly in agriculture
- increased pressure on the
balance of payments and the fiscal position, due to increased import requirements of food
grains as well as the cost of rehabilitation works. This could lead to a reduction in ADP
outlays
- Significant damage to an already
strained infrastructure slowing economic and social recovery
